The Shops on Lake Avenue, Pasadena, CA

A state-of-the-art development that honors the history of one of Southern California's premier shopping districts, The Shops on Lake Avenue celebrated its grand opening on April 10, 2003.

The development, which wraps a 1947 Welton Becket-designed Macy's Department Store, adds open, pedestrian-friendly spaces to the street's already upscale shopping area. The Shops opens to the street, yet veers from a typical downtown storefront arrangement by creating walks, park-like plazas and off-street structured parking, with shops and restaurants in two two-story buildings and one single-story building.

The project comprises approximately 136,000 square feet of new retail space, including three restaurants and a 312-space parking garage for a total of 1,197 parking spaces at the site. With capacity for 27 outlets, in addition to the 295,000-square-foot Macy's, the Shops includes such unconventional architectural features as winged escalators, ground-to-roof glass walls and unique public plaza lamps. A focal point is a public artwork, Mobius Bench, by Acconci Studio (Vito Acconci, Larry Sassi, Dario Nunez, Kyle Steinfeld, Peter Dorsey.)

The Shops is a testimony to architecture as both a repository of collective memory and a catalyst for change. It is also a prime example of young Los Angeles architects (MDA Johnson Favaro Architecture and Urban Design) recreating a historic part of the city in a contemporary light.

Businesses within the complex offer a merchandise mix with broad appeal. Stores include The Children's Place, Coldwater Creek, Talbots Kids, Talbots Woman, Trader Joe's, Bank of America, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Corner Bakery, Linens 'n Things, Organized Living, Orvis, Peninsula Luggage, Collections of Stein Mart and Tara Lyn on Lake. The previous I. Magnin store, just south of the complex, now houses Borders Books and Coffeehouse.
